Ballachulish, Railway Station General View

SC 495482

Description Ballachulish, Railway Station General View

Date 23/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 495482

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former Ballachulish Station This station was opened in 1903 by the Caledonian Railway as the terminus of a branch from the Callander and Oban Railway at Connel. The stations on the line were in an English Arts and Crafts style. This view shows the street frontage of the station, with the glazed canopy over the entrance boxed in, but otherwise unaltered. The building to the right is the former locomotive shed. The railway closed in 1966. This building has, since 1976, been converted into a health centre. The line was built to serve the slate quarries at Ballachulish, but also a tourist trade. The Caledonian had hope of using it ultimately to reach Fort William. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
