Scope and Content Ben Nevis Distillery, Fort William, Inverness-shire This distillery was founded in 1826 by Angus McDonnell, but was developed mainly by the McDonald family, of whom Long John was the most famous. It was taken over in 1955 by Ben Nevis Distillery (Fort William) Ltd, who installed a Coffey still. This view shows the eastern part of the distillery courtyard. The distillery had been substantially remodelled over the years, bur the brick chimneys were probably of some antiquity. The 1955 takeover involved Joseph Hobbs, a colourful entrepreneur, also proprietor of the 'Great Glen Cattle Ranch'. The Coffey still his company installed was for making grain whisky. The distillery is now in Japanese ownership. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
