Scope and Content Ironstone storage bin by pier, Suisnish, Raasay Ironstone mining on Raasay was developed by William Baird and Co Ltd from 1913. The stone was roasted in kilns, and shipped from a large concrete-piled steamer pier. The mines were worked intensively during the First World War, but closed soon after. This view shows the massive concrete bin which was used for storing roasted (calcined) ironstone awaiting shipment. The bases of two of the calcining kilns can be seen above the bin. To the left is the bottom of the railway from the mine. Ore was transported from this bin to vessels berthed at the pier by a belt conveyor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
