Scope and Content Ironstone mine, Raasay This mine was opened up by William Baird and Co Ltd to supply ironstone to their iron-smelting works in Lanarkshire and Ayrshire. It was connected with shipping facilities at Suisnish by an inclined railway. This view shows the entrance to the mine from the railway. The workings extended right through the island. The mine had a short life, but was intensively worked during the first World War, largely by German prisoners of war. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
