Scope and Content New harbour, Portsoy, Banffshire This harbour was built to complement the old harbour of 1692, which dries out at low tide. It consists of two piers, the outer one on a U-plan, a massive breakwater on its north and west faces. A short inner pier completes the enclosure of a basin. This view shows the harbour from the east, with the breakwater pier on the right. The sheltered entrance to the basin between the two piers can be seen on the left. The small craft in the basin were typical of those using it in the mid 1970s. This harbour was built at a time when the Scottish herring fishing was being encouraged by the United Kingdom government, and at a time, too, when harbour design had become more professional.
