Scope and Content Road bridge over river Clyde, Wandel, Lanarkshire This is a three-span masonry bridge with segmental arches and triangular cutwaters. The arch rings have been strengthened with tiebars, and the parapets have largely been rebuilt in sandstone ashlar. It spans the river Clyde. This view shows the bridge from the south west, with its massive cutwaters and otherwise slender construction indicating its early date. Behind it on the left is the high-level composite steel and concrete bridge which superseded it. This bridge, which was too narrow for modern road traffic, was bypassed in the 1960s in works associated with the upgrading of the A74 trunk road from Glasgow to Carlisle.
