Scope and Content Troon Station, Ayrshire This is a two-platform through station on a large scale, designed in 'Arts and Crafts' style, probably by James Miller. Troon was developing as a fashionable dormitory town for Glasgow and Kilmarnock, hence the scale of building. This view shows the station from the south, with the awnings supported by steel girders. Each of the awnings consists of a series of pyramidal roofs, a most unusual feature. The original Troon station was on a line to the east, and this new station is on a loop constructed to bring the railway nearer to the town centre. The Glasgow and South Western Railway was anxious to develop Troon as a resort. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
