Ayr, Auld Brig View from S showing SE front

SC 494310

Description Ayr, Auld Brig View from S showing SE front

Date 4/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494310

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Old Bridge, Ayr, Ayrshire This is a four-span masonry bridge, with segmental arches and triangular cutwaters with sloping tops. It is the only surviving large medieval bridge in Ayrshire, and is a footbridge. This view shows the bridge from the south east. Note the massive construction of the piers, characteristic of the period of its construction. He pointed arch of the left-hand span is probably a deformed segmental span. In response to public pressure for its retention this bridge was extensively repaired in 1910, with much use of concrete in the interior. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
