Scope and Content Gardenstown Harbour, Banffshire This harbour is formed by two breakwater piers and a linking stretch of quayed shore, creating a triangular basin. It was built during the herring boom of the later 19th century and probably replaced a smaller earlier harbour. This view shows two warehouses on the inner quay. Both could be accessed at ground floor (quayside) level and upper level (Harbour Street, also known as the Low Road). The one on the left is the older of the two, and was known as 'the blue house'. It was a popular location for 'roups' or public auctions in the village. The one on the right contained (on the upper level) individual net stores for keeping and mending nets and (on the lower level) the coal merchant's store. This harbour rapidly became too shallow for the larger fishing vessels, and so for many years boats owned in Gardenstown have operated from other north-east ports. This harbour is still used by small inshore boats and pleasure craft. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
