Scope and Content Salmon fishing station, Tugnet, Spey Bay, Morayshire This station at the mouth of the Spey is the largest and finest salmon station in Scotland. It consists of a U-plan block of bothy, stores and boiling house, a courtyard range of fishermen's houses, and a three-chamber icehouse. This view shows the entrance to the ante-chamber of the three-chamber icehouse. The stone above the timber lintel of the door bears the date 1630 and a salmon. It has either been recut or reused from an earlier building. Salmon fishing was widely practised in Scotland, especially on the north and east coasts. This is the largest ice-house in Scotland, its size indicating the scale of the fishery. It is now a visitor centre interpreting the salmon-fishing trade. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
