Pollosgan Mill, Kiln; Interior View of fire hole

SC 494226

Description Pollosgan Mill, Kiln; Interior View of fire hole

Date 20/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494226

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Mill, Pollosgan, Skye This is a small west highland water-powered corn mill, serving a crofting township, which was restored to working condition in 1968-9 as a visitor attraction. The restoration was in the spirit of the original, rather than being strictly accurate. This view shows the kiln fireplace, with a ladder to the kiln floor. The fireplace appears to have been an original feature; the ladder is conjectural. The small size of the mill reflects the limited arable farming potential of the surrounding area. The mill has been restored with a single pair of stones from Rogart Mill, Sutherland, driven an all-iron overshot wheel of c1902. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
