Pollosgan Mill; Interior View of millstones and gearing

SC 494205

Description Pollosgan Mill; Interior View of millstones and gearing

Date 20/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494205

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Glendale Mill, Skye This is a small west highland water-powered corn mill, serving a crofting township, which was restored to working condition in 1968-9 as a visitor attraction. The restoration was in the spirit of the original, rather than being strictly accurate. This view shows the interior of the mill as restored, with the single pair of stones. This gives an impression, but no more, of the original layout, as there would have been a floor in the building at the level of the stones. The small size of the mill reflects the limited arable farming potential of the surrounding area. The mill has been restored with a single pair of stones from Rogart Mill, Sutherland, driven an all-iron overshot wheel of c1902. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
