Broadford, Limekiln Detail of drawhole

SC 494129

Description Broadford, Limekiln Detail of drawhole

Date 19/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494129

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Limekiln, Broadford, Skye This is a substantial three shaft limekiln on a mound above an apparently contemporary rubble pier. Each shaft has a single draw arch. The kiln is built of rubble, and the draw arches are semicircular, tapering inwards to the drawholes. This view shows one of the semicircular draw arches. The rubble masonry round the arch has collapsed. This kiln was presumably designed to use coal imported through the adjacent pier, and to distribute burnt lime by sea from the same pier. It is unusual in not being built into a bank. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
