Scope and Content St Anthony's Chapel, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh St Anthony's Chapel is one of the most popular, and romantic, places in the Park. The ruins are well-preserved and stand on a spur looking out to the north. They show a two-storeyed building, but surprisingly little is known about it. Popular tradition asserts that there was a hermitage associated with the chapel but recent excavations have found little evidence for this. Masonry remains close by probably relate to a storehouse. The exact date of the foundation of the building is unknown, but by 1426 it needed repairs, and the Pope sent money for these and for new vestments. By 1581 it had gone out of use, though the building may have been adapted for other purposes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
