Scope and Content Post crane on pier, Isleornsay, Skye This is a substantial drystone rubble pier, built to serve the hamlet of Isleornsay, a trading post for the surrounding part of Skye. It was repaired a few years earlier by Sir Ian Noble as part of his revivification of the area. This view shows the cast iron post crane on the pier head, recovered and overhauled as part of Sir Ian Noble's repair scheme. The wooden jib is a tree-trunk, still with some bark on it. Until the 1930s much of the trade of Skye was conducted by sea, owing to the difficulty of the terrain in much of the island. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
