Scope and Content Kyle of Lochalsh-Kyleakin Ferry This is a very ancient route to Skye from mainland Scotland. Regular vehicular services began in 1930, and a succession of ferryboats of increasing size operated the crossing until the completion of the Skye Bridge in the mid 1990s. This view shows the MV Lochalsh, built in 1971, one of the boats operating the service in the 1970s, approaching the ramped ferry pier at Kyle of Lochalsh, from Kyleakin, which can be seen in the background. These were the first though-deck vessels on this route, earlier vehicle ferries having car platforms mounted on turntables, or having turntables on board. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
