Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 493530

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Kyle of Lochalsh Station and pier This station and pier were opened in 1897 as the terminus of an extension of the Dingwall and Skye Railway from Strome Ferry. They were designed, under the supervision of Murdoch Paterson, as an interchange point for steamer services to the islands. This view shows the landward end of the station, which has an island platform approached by a ramp from an overbridge, seen on the left. The wooden station building is behind the train, with the steamer berths beyond. The extension from Strome Ferry was built to counter the North British Railways schemes to extend the West Highland Railway to a new railhead on the west coast. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
