Scope and Content Bridge of Oich, Aberchalder This bridge, at first sight a conventional suspension bridge, is in fact a double cantilever structure, built to a patent by James Dredge, Bath. It has arched and pedimented pylons supporting Dredge's system of chains, carrying an iron-framed timber deck This view shows the deck of the bridge from the southern pylon. It is composed of wooden planks, supported on a light wrought-iron framework. This deck carried main road traffic until the opening of its reinforced-concrete successor in 1932. This is the last Dredge bridge in Scotland still in its original location, and is now in the care of Historic Scotland. It has been repaired, and is now open to the public.
