Scope and Content Fort Augustus Locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire Fort Augustus Locks are situated where the canal leaves Loch Ness at its south west end. There are five locks, arranged as a staircase, with the top gates of one lock acting as the bottom gates of the one above. This view shows the middle of the flight, with the capstan head used to open the gates manually, and the black steel case of the controls of the replacement hydraulic system behind it. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
