Scope and Content Laggan Locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire Laggan Locks are situated where the canal joins Loch Lochy from the east. There are two locks, built in a loose gravel that has caused problems with the lock walls from time to time. This view shows the lower lock at Laggan, with Loch Lochy beyond. The grassy bank beyond the end of the lock wallprotects vessels entering the lock, but the loch often rises to cover it. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
