Description Corpach, Caledonian Canal Basin General View
Date 18/5/1976
Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland
Catalogue Number SC 493311
Category On-line Digital Images
Scope and Content Corpach Basin, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire This basin is immediately above the entrance lock at the west end of the canal, This lock was lengthened to accommodate vessels serving the pulp and paper mill built nearby in the 1960s, and a new quay was built on the basin, equipped with cranes. This view was taken from the top gates of the entrance lock, and shows, in the distance, the new quay and its derrick cranes. The fishing boats are typical of the vessels which used the canal to move between fishing grounds. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
