Scope and Content Banavie locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire This flight of eight locks is the longest on the Caledonian Canal, and is popularly known as 'Neptune's Staircase'. The locks are arranged as a staircase, that is, the top gates of one lock are also the bottom gates of the one above. This view shows repairs in progress in two locks in the middle of the flight. The gates between the two chambers are open. The barge with the crane is the Lochalsh II, converted from a car ferry for use as a maintenance boat. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
