Scope and Content Banavie locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire This flight of eight locks is the longest on the Caledonian Canal, and is popularly known as 'Neptune's Staircase'. The locks are arranged as a staircase, that is, the top gates of one lock are also the bottom gates of the one above. This view shows the flight from the road swing bridge over the canal. The great width of the locks (12.2m) is obvious. The gates are steel, and operated by hydraulic power since the early 1960s. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
