Scope and Content Laggan Locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire Laggan Locks are situated where the canal joins Loch Lochy from the east. There are two locks, built in a loose gravel that has caused problems with the lock walls from time to time. This view shows the upper lock at Laggan, with the lock-keeper's bothy on the right, in front of it is one of the capstans which operated the lock gates. Poles were fitted into the slots in the head, which turned a drum with a chain to pull the gate. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
