Scope and Content Moy Swing Bridge, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire This is the last of the hand-operated cast-iron swing bridges left on the canal. It has two leaves, and the bridgekeeper is provided with a boat to cross the canal to open the off-side leaf. It was built as an accommodation bridge for Moy Farm. This view shows the bridge from the north west. The white cylinders at each end of the bridge contain the hand gearing to swing it. The bridge-keeper's cottage is out of sight to the right, on the far side of the canal. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
