Scope and Content Banavie locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire This flight of eight locks is the longest on the Caledonian Canal, and is popularly known as 'Neptune's Staircase'. The locks are arranged as a staircase, that is, the top gates of one lock are also the bottom gates of the one above. This view shows the top of the locks, with yacht moorings in the foreground. The size of the bollards indicates that they were installed for mooring rather larger vessels. The top gates of the top lock can be seen in the distance. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
