Scope and Content Kalemouth Suspension Bridge, near Eckford, Roxburghshire (The Scottish Borders council area) This suspension bridge over the river Teviot is one of the oldest in Scotland. It was designed by Captain Samuel Brown, who had patented both flat and round links for the chains of suspension bridges. This one has round links. This view shows the bridge from the east, showing the pyramidal pylons which support the suspension chains, and the construction of the chains themselves, which are made up of pairs of long links, joined together by short flat links. This is one of three surviving Scottish suspension bridges definitely attributed to Brown, whose patented forms of link were later widely used. Brown was a Royal Naval captain who had responsibility for the procuring of anchor chains. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
