Scope and Content Boatbuilding yard, Eyemouth, Berwickshire (The Scottish Borders council area) Eyemouth was the port for the rich corn-growing Merse of Berwickshire, but after the opening of the North British Railway in 1846 it became predominantly a fishing port. This yard was built to construct and repair wooden fishing vessels. This view shows a wooden fishing-boat being constructed on one of the two slipways. The boat has a transom stern, favoured by many owners by the 1970s. The fully-framed hull is partly planked. By the 1990s the demand for moderately-sized wooden fishing boats had almost disappeared, and this yard was engaged entirely in the repair and overhaul of the existing fleet. Eyemouth was still an important fishing port. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
