Scope and Content Granary, Eyemouth, Berwickshire (The Scottish Borders council area) Eyemouth was the port for the rich corn-growing Merse of Berwickshire, and until the opening of the North British Railway in 1846 was of major significance to the area. The harbour was improved by John Smeaton in 1768. This view shows the largest of a number of warehouses close to the quay on the north side of the harbour, seen from the south west. The style of construction is typical of granaries of the later 18th and early 19th centuries. By 1974 this building had long been out of use as a granary. It has since been converted into flats. During the herring boom of the late 19th century it was probably used as a curing-house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
