Scope and Content St Abbs Harbour, Berwickshire (The Scottish Borders council) This harbour was first formed by constructing two masonry piers to form a basin, with natural rock outcrops forming the base of one of the piers, and also a breakwater. In the late 19th century two concrete outer breakwater piers were added. This view shows the 1833 piers from the north, with the edge of the lifeboat house on the left. Note the dressed-stone construction of the piers, and the use of iron straps to reinforce the pier on the left. The harbour was enlarged during the late 19th century herring boom, but in the 20th century larger fishing boats were introduced, and the use of this harbour declined. It was still being used by inshore boats in the 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
