Scope and Content Bonawe Ironworks, Argyll This was built as a charcoal-fuelled iron-smelting works, one of five established in the Scottish highlands in the 18th century, This one was set up by partners in the Newland Company of Lancashire, to exploit the scrub woodlands of the area. This view shows the larger of the two charcoal sheds. Charcoal was made in the woods round the works during the summer, and brought to the works for dry storage. This shed was used as a byre after the works closed. This was the last charcoal-fuelled iron-smelting works to operate in Scotland, closing in about 1876. The sheds survived in agricultural use until the 1960s, when the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works began a programme of repair. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
