Scope and Content Former slate quarrymen's cottages, Ellenabeich, Seil, Argyll These cottages were built to house men working in the extensive slate quarries in the village, probably the largest in Scotland at the time. This view shows two rows of the two-roomed cottages which were the typical houses in the village. The cottages are built of slate rubble, rendered, and are roofed with slate. Most are now holiday homes. Slate quarrying was becoming increasingly important in the early 19th century, with strong demand from builders in the central belt of Scotland.
