Scope and Content Former slate quarrymen's cottages, Easdale Island, Argyll This housing, consisting of small two-roomed cottages, was provided for men working in the slate quarries on this little island off Seil. Slates have been quarried on Easdale since the 18th century, but these houses are 19th century. This view shows the least-altered houses, grouped round a square. Most. If not all are now holiday homes. The slate from Easdale was the first west highland slate to be generally used outside the immediate vicinity of its production. At first the slates were made from loose material on island beaches, and quarrying began in the early 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
