Scope and Content Oban Distillery, Oban, Argyll This is a Highland Malt Whisky distillery, founded in or about 1794 by Hugh John and James Stevenson, and rebuilt after 1883, when it was taken over by James Walter Higgin. It passed into the hands of The Distillers' Co Ltd in 1925. This view shows the distillery from the west, with the three-storey office at the end of the street, and the maltings to the right, below the chimney, The other distillery buildings are behind the maltings. Malting stopped here in 1968, and there is now a visitor centre on the ground floor of the former maltings. The stillhouse was rebuilt in 1972. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
