Scope and Content Feolin Ferry Pier, Jura, Argyll This ramped ferry pier was built as part of the transport improvements undertaken by the Commissioners for Highland Roads and Bridges in the early 19th century. It was designed by David Wilson and James Hollinsworth. This view shows the pier from the landward end. The Portakabin is set on top of the round-ended projection which divides the ramp into two. The projection was probably intended as a protection from adverse winds. This pier was designed as the Jura end of a ferry service to Port Askaig on Islay It was constructed under the general supervision of Thomas Telford. The use of a central division in a ferry pier is unusual, and this version is unique in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
