Scope and Content Old pier, Craighouse, Jura, Argyll This is a long masonry pier, with an angled head, built as part of the transport improvements undertaken by the Commissioners for Highland Roads and Bridges in the early 19th century. It was designed by John Sinclair. This view shows the pier from the west, with its substantial masonry construction. This harbour was designed to accommodate the small sailing craft which carried on the trade of the west highlands until the development of the steamship. It was constructed under the general supervision of Thomas Telford. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
