Scope and Content Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Argyll This is an Islay Malt whisky distillery, in operation in the early 1790s, and revived in 1817-8. It was developed by the McDougall family between 1821 and 1902. Its later ownership pattern is complex. This view shows the kiln of the eastern range of floor maltings. It has a corrugated-iron roof, a distinctive feature of the malt kilns at several Islay distilleries. In common with the other Islay distilleries, Ardbeg was designed to be served by sea, and it has two piers. Since 1976 the distillery has only operated sporadically. Some of the buildings there in 1976 have been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
