Scope and Content Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Argyll This is an Islay Malt whisky distillery, in operation in the early 1790s, and revived in 1817-8. It was developed by the McDougall family between 1821 and 1902. Its later ownership pattern is complex. This view shows the distillery from the north east, with the two blocks of floor maltings evident. The building between them was the peat store. The floor maltings were still in use in 1976. In common with the other Islay distilleries, Ardbeg was designed to be served by sea, and it has two piers. Since 1976 the distillery has only operated sporadically. Some of the buildings there in 1976 have been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
