Scope and Content Port Ellen Distillery, Islay, Argyll This is an Islay Malt whisky distillery, founded by A Mackay & Co, but developed principally by the Ramsay family, who owned it from 1836 to 1920. It was closed in 1929, apart from the maltings and warehouses, but revived in 1966-7. This view shows the main productive buildings as rebuilt in 1966-7. Note the pyramid-roofed malt kiln ventilators behind the productive buildings. This distillery is famous in distilling history in being the place where the initial trials of the now universal spirit safe were carried out, in 1824. This allows the quality of the output of the stills to be controlled without direct access. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
