Scope and Content Bridgend Woollen Mill, Islay, Argyll This mill was built to make tweeds and other woollen cloths, replacing an early 19th century carding mill. It was driven by an internal undershot waterwheel 3.66m in diameter. The mill still contains early carding and spinning machinery. This view shows the mill from the entrance front. The two-storey and two attic building houses the carding, spinning and weaving equipment, with the dyeing and finishing in the single-storey wing. This mill belonged to the Christie family, who operated it until the early 1970s. It has since been reopened, but only as a weaving factory. The old carding and spinning machinery is still, however, in place. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
