Scope and Content Great Window in the south wall of Parliament Hall, Parliament House, Parliament Square, Edinburgh Parliament Hall, built by Sir James Murray in 1639, was the meeting place of the Scottish Parliament and the Outer House of the Court of Session. The Great Window was designed by Wilhelm Von Kaulbach and executed by M Ainmuller in 1868. The Great Window shows the founding of the Court of Session in 1532 by James V: the king presents the Charter of Institution to the Abbot of Cambuskenneth, first Lord President, who kneels before him surrounded by members of clergy and court. The Court of Session, based on the Parlement de Paris, was founded in 1532 as the supreme court for civil cases in Scotland, exercising jurisdiction over property and persons. The Act of Union of 1707 safeguarded it 'in all time coming'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
