Scope and Content View of the interior of St Giles' Cathedral, looking East, High Street, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been the central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. Its central tower with its open crown forms a distinctive feature of the sky-line of the city. The nave's fine pointed tunnel-vaulting is characteristic of Scottish medieval architecture. Famous Scottish regiments' banners and battle honours hang from the pillars. The pulpit, in Caen stone, is by John Rhind. The east window depicts biblical scenes. John Knox was the first Protestant minister at St Giles from 1559 until his death in 1572. Influenced by John Calvin in Geneva, Knox was instrumental in bringing about the Reformation in Scotland in 1560, and the break with the Pope in Rome. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
