Scope and Content Moray House, Canongate, Edinburgh Moray House was built for Mary, Dowager Countess of Home in 1618 and given to her daughter, Countess of Moray in 1643. It was visited by Charles I, and Cromwell lived here on two occasions. It is now a teachers' training college. The balcony, on massive carved corbels at first-floor level on the gable facing the street, was where, in 1650, the Marquis of Argyll watched as his bitter enemy, the Marquis of Montrose was carried on a cart to his execution at the Mercat Cross. Archibald Campbell, first Marquis of Argyll, a leader of the Covenanters, was chiefly responsible for the execution in 1650 of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, a Royalist and leader of Charles I's forces in Scotland.
