Description Sandside, Harbour Harbour and S block of storehouses from SW

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 488228

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Sandside Harbour, Caithness (Highland council area) This complex was built by a local landowner, Major Innes, to encourage trade and fishing. The harbour was formed by two angled breakwater piers, the northern one with an arm to the east to protect the entrance. This view shows the harbour from the south west, with the breakwater piers to the right. The two blocks of fishermen's houses have basement stores facing the harbour. This harbour was, like others on the coast of Caithness, well built of the durable local flagstone, and remains in generally good condition. It has been little used for many years.
