Scope and Content Yarrow Stone, Scottish Borders Ploughing of the moorland known as Annan Street brought this Early Christian monument to light. The slab was found at a depth of 20cm under the soil, and beneath the slab were bones and ashes. Scholars differ about the translation of the inscription which is badly weathered. It could be read as: THIS IS THE EVERLASTING MEMORIAL IN THIS PLACE LIE THE MOST FAMOUS PRINCES NUDUS AND DUMNOGENUS. IN THIS TOMB LIE THE TWO SONS OF LIBERALIS. Many antiquarians, including Sir Walter Scott, came to look at the stone when it was discovered. Most felt it tied into some of the many conflicts and feuds recorded in various ballads and folk tales of the Borders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
