Scope and Content Detail of painted ceiling in Bailie John McMorran's House, Riddle's Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Bailie McMorran's house was built in the late 16th century for Bailie John McMorran, a wealthy merchant and city magistrate. It is an example of 'the gentlemen's mansions' 'obscurely found' in the closes off the Lawnmarket. The compartmented and elaborately painted ceiling in the room in the west of the house is by Thomas Bonnar in 1898. During the early 18th century painted panelling became very fashionable in Scotland, especially work by James Norie which was sought after by rich residents of the Old Town. Painted panels by Norie were discovered during restoration at Riddle's Court. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
