Scope and Content Interior view of St Mary's Parish Church, Monymusk, Aberdeenshire In 1170 Gilchrist, Earl of Mar, established a community of Augustinian canons at Monymusk. The present church, although mainly modern, incorporates two principal features of the Augustinian priory-church: the west tower and the chancel arch. The west arch, seen here, which stands between the nave and the tower, has neither capitals or shafts, unlike the chancel arch behind; it has merely an impost band. In medieval churches visual emphasis was given to the area around the altar. The church, a typical mid-12th-century parish church, is built in a Romanesque style. This term is used to describe buildings of this date in Europe which are characterised by the use of round arches, and thick walls to support the roof. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
