Scope and Content General view of barrage balloon site, Innan Neb, Flotta, Orkney Islands This is one of the barrage balloon sites set up around Lyness, part of the passive air defence of Lyness Naval Base during World War II. Balloons supported a wire which was an obstruction to attacking aircraft forcing them to fly above the balloons. This shows part of two of the circles of securing points that surrounded the main anchor block of the barrage balloon site so the balloon could be secured heading into the wind. Lyness and Scapa Flow were used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving many sites abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
