Scope and Content View from south-east of Birkdale Place, Ardler Phase I, Dundee, during demolition In 1964, Birkdale Place, Ardler Phase I was approved for construction. The development consisted of six, 17-storeyed slab blocks of 1788 flats in total. The 'Skarne' system of pre-fabricated panels was used for their construction. This photograph shows the dust cloud caused by the demolition of the two large slab blocks. The public have been kept back behind a security cordon, and three cameramen are recording the scene. The Skarne system of pre-fabricated panels and units cast on site was used to build this vast development. The company built a factory at Longhaugh Quarry to meet contracts offered by Dundee in the 1960s, and went on to build the Whitfield development. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
