Scope and Content View from south-east of Birkdale Place, Ardler Phase I, Dundee, during demolition Birkdale Place, Ardler Phase I was approved for construction in 1964. The development consisted of six, 17-storeyed slab blocks, containing 1788 flats in total. The blocks were constructed using the 'Skarne' system of pre-fabricated panels. This photograph shows demolition in progress on two of the slab blocks. The block on the left has been totally demolished. The other tower is about to fall. The public are being kept back by a safety cordon. The Skarne system of pre-fabricated panels and units cast on site was used to build this vast development. The company built a factory at Longhaugh Quarry to meet contracts offered by Dundee in the 1960s, and went on to build the Whitfield development. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
